When you hear the term “couples boudoir,” we’re sure some of you might be thinking something along the lines of: “A couples boudoir session? Oh gosh no! I’d NEVER do something like that with my partner. That’s just raunchy!” And don’t worry! We get it! It’s so easy to jump to that gut reaction. But we encourage you to broaden your mind a little and learn a little bit more about couples boudoir photography and what it really entails!

And what better way to do that than giving you an inside look at an intimate couples boudoir session! This way you can pretend to be a fly on the wall and truly get a feel for what couples boudoir is all about!

So come along with us as we walk through our couples boudoir session with C and M!

Getting Comfortable For Your Couples Boudoir Session

Now, boudoir photography sessions can often times be a lot more anxiety-inducing than regular photo sessions! For many, the idea of showing off your body in front of the camera and a stranger can be really overwhelming! And we totally understand that it’s not the easiest thing to do!

That’s why we aim to make your session as comfortable as we can! And I know some of you may read that and feel those words are somewhat empty. But we truly mean it when we say we aim to create a space in our photography for everyone to be comfortable and at ease. And that doesn’t just go for boudoir sessions! We are very intentional when it comes to creating a space where inhibitions can be lowered and you can truly enjoy yourself.

With our boudoir sessions, we don’t necessarily put a time limit on them. Now, there is a certain amount of time that we will be shooting for and a specific number of images you will receive but when it comes to time, we never try to rush anything or force things to go too fast. Instead, we’d rather put more emphasis on and spend some time catching up, getting to know each other, and just talking. This is the perfect chance for you to get a feel for our personalities and philosophy so, hopefully, you can get a little bit more comfortable with the session and us!

We asked C and M how they felt before their session so we could get a better feel for what the process is like for a client approaching a couples boudoir session! C said that she nervous and anxious about the session while M was more so curious. These, we feel, are pretty valid feelings to feel as you approach a session like this.

We love that C and M mentioned the curiosity part of their feelings as they approached their session! We think this is something a lot of couples feel because boudoir photography, as growing of an industry as it is, is still kind of a don’t-ask-don’t tell kind of situation. Boudoir photography has been around for a LONG TIME but many people hear about boudoir and immediately think of it as “sinful” or “dirty.”

But with anything that is deemed “sinful” or “dirty,” there’s a human curiosity that is inevitable. As a boudoir photographer, our goal is to use that curiosity not to dissuade someone from boudoir or confirm their preconceived notions of it being “dirty” but to show them the beautiful ways that boudoir can heal your inner self and take a step into improving your relationship with your body and sexuality. Curiosity is a powerful thing if it is used in the right way.

Into the Session: Intimate Connection and Sweet Moments

As we got started actually taking photos for C and M, I could feel some of the nerves myself. I had shot so MANY couples before but never anything like this. Just as curiosity is a strong entity, the fear of the unknown is possibly even stronger.

With the way I approached this session (and how I will continue to approach boudoir and couples boudoir) with the only intentions of capturing playful, sweet moments between the couple and allowing them a chance to connect in front of the camera.

I can admit that there are some couples boudoir photography that has made me SUPER uncomfortable and what I find is that these are the super sexually staged photos where it feels fake. Like have you ever seen a Victoria Secret ad and looked at the model in lingerie and thought to yourself, “There ain’t no way that girl is comfortable sitting like that!” or “No one makes that face in the bedroom EVER!” To be sexual or exude sexiness looks different for everyone so we keep that in mind when we shoot sessions like these.

With C and M, I just encouraged them to be themselves and do so naturally. A perfect question to ask is something along the lines of: “When you’re trying to be fun and playful with one another, what’s something you will do?” And then, we’ll have the couple do exactly that! That way, they’re not trying to pretend to be a couple who they are not!

C told us that I (KC) gave them so much pep and enthusiasm that just encouraged them to keep going throughout their session! And that’s something you’ll expect from every one of our sessions! I’m the ultimate cheerleader and it’s important to me to be that person for people! Just try not to get embarrassed when I cheer you on for giving your partner a passionate kiss!

For C and M’s couples boudoir session, we shot it in our home. This feels the most natural in photos so nothing looks too staged or out of the ordinary! C had multiple lingerie outfits and we had an absolute blast playing around with all of the outfits. M was shirtless with a pair of jeans on and this paired so well with the outfits C had brought. M even slipped down to his undies for part of the session too! We encourage our couples to do whatever is comfortable to them. If taking off a certain article of clothing is too much, then it stays on for the session no matter what.

In sum, we practically just pranced around the house as I snapped photos of the couple in their element! I know it doesn’t sound all that exciting but it truly follows the same process as any other couple session we have (engagement, etc.) And it was exciting to witness this couple connect in such an intimate way!

C and M were chatting away the entire time, giving each other compliments and being so sweet! This is especially encouraged in our sessions! C and M told us they walked away and reflected on how amazing the conversations they had during their session were and how it really brought them together.

After The Session: Walking Away From A Couples Boudoir Session

Walking away from a couples boudoir session is one of the most refreshing feelings! Just imagine: you walk away from an amazing session where you were able to connect with your partner in a way you maybe never have before! You get to anxiously wait for your gallery so you can go through all of the photos together! C and M told us that immediately once they got in the car, they were just ecstatic and could not wait to see the photos.

A couples boudoir session can be an amazing thing for a relationship! It’s a vulnerable experience to go through together and can bring you so close to one another. A couples boudoir session is the perfect excuse to slow down for an hour or two and really take that time to focus on your relationship! Work and family and kids can weigh so heavily on a couple in different seasons of life and this is a great way to feel that spark again!

When you receive your gallery from a couples boudoir session, it can be such a special moment. You will have these photos to remember those moments you had in front of the camera forever. It’s a way of freezing time when all that time goes flying by!

C and M received their gallery when they had just arrived in Florida for a family trip and immediately went through their gallery together! They said the photos gave them a newfound confidence within themselves and together as a couple. These photos can serve as a constant reminder of that confidence!

It’s like that moment when you get a photo of yourself that you really love! You look at it and say to yourself, “Dayummmmm! I look good!” This can happen with everyday pictures and maybe you find an outfit that just suits you and does you well! Imagine if you could have that same experience with your body? A boudoir session is one of the ways to take a step back and really admire your body and all that it has done for you! It’s a celebration! Even further, a couples boudoir session is the celebration of the connection you share with your partner and the way your bodies tell the story of that connection!

To Be Frank, Couples Boudoir Sessions Are Fucking Amazing!

As we’ve touched on, there’s a lot of stigma around couples boudoir and boudoir in general! We’re here to tell you that it does not have to be a “dirty” or “sinful” thing. Boudoir is about empowerment, connection to your body, and personal growth. Don’t let your inhibitions stop you from trying something new and allowing you to connect with the body you were given on a deeper level!

We were able to connect on such a deep level and they are amazing people that we are so lucky to have in our lives! Their willingness to try new things and explore is so admirable and we are just so appreciative of them!
